Case Study - Brownfield Property in Northborough, MA

Corporate Environmental Advisors, Inc. teamed with town officials in Northborough, Massachusetts to apply for town Brownfield grants.

Phase II Comprehensive Site Assessment and Phase III Remedial Action Plan

In May 2005, the town of Northborough was awarded an EPA Brownfield's Remediation Grant of $200,000 to support the cleanup of the former Fish and Game property at 119 Colburn Street.  In February of 2006, a Massachusetts EOEA Brownfield's Assessment Grant of $63,550 was awarded to conduct the Phase II Comprehensive Site Assesment and Phase III Remedial Action Plan activities at the Northborough Fish and Game site.  Previously used as a sportsmen's club and skeet shooting area, the town acquired the property in 2002.  CEA's assessment found evidence of lead and arsenic contamination on the property.  It also measured the potential risks posed by the hazardous materials at the site on public health, the environment and the overall welfare of the community.  Upon completion, the town plans to use the property for passive recreation and conservation purposes.

In a letter awarding the most recent grant, the Brownfield's program director said the proposal, "displayed a strong commitment to the remediation and redevelopment of Brownfield's and were of very high quality.  Thank you for participating and for your commitment to creating a quality environment for your community."

CEA's professional staff has played a prominent role in successfully remediating and restoring Brownfield sites for numerous other communities throughout Massachusetts in close cooperation with local, state and other public officials, including personnel from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
